Root Canal Treatment

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?

A root canal is a dental treatment performed to repair tooth decay or tooth infection where the pulp of the tooth, composed of nerves, blood tissues and connective tissue, becomes inflamed or infected. During a root canal the pulp of the tooth is removed and the canals both cleaned and sealed to prevent growth of bacteria. At Barre Dentistry  Implants we offer a highly skilled and qualified team of dentists with expertise in performing root canals.

WHEN IS A ROOT CANAL NECESSARY?

Symptoms that indicate nerve or pulp damage vary from patient to patient. Common symptoms of acquiring root canal treatment are;

  • A toothache which causes prolonged sensitivity when consuming hot or cold liquids or foods
  • Severe toothache when chewing or applying pressure
  • Headaches
  • An abscess may cause swelling or bleeding around the tooth or surrounding parts.

Damage to the pulp or nerve of the tooth requires root canal treatment when the following may occur;

ABSCESS (INFECTION): — an infection develops causing pockets of pus to form around the end of the root resulting in complete damage of the pulp. Antibiotics may prevent the infection from spreading but a root canal is necessary to prevent onset of further dental issues.

DEEP CAVITY: — where tooth decay extends deep into the cavity resulting in the pulp becoming infected with bacteria and causing decayed tissue at the end of the root.

DENTAL TRAUMA: — traumatic incident where a tooth has been knocked out with great force causing the nerves and pulp of the tooth to be damaged.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

At Barre Dentistry & Implants, a root canal requires patients to undergo through dental examinations to determine whether or not root canal treatment is necessary. Digital dental x-rays are essential in identifying whether the root canals and surrounding bone have become infected. Local anesthesia is required to numb the area being treated so as to allow our patients to feel at ease. A rubber dam is placed over the tooth to keep the area dry from saliva overflow. Following this, a hole is drilled into the affected tooth and the pulp along with the bacteria is removed from the canals with the canals cleansed using sodium hypochlorite. If an infection is evident in the tooth, a medication may be placed inside to clear it with a temporary filling placed in the hole until the tooth is ready for the sealing process. During the next dental visit, the canals of the affected tooth are filled with paste and a rubber compound known as gutta-percha and a permanent filling id applied to seal the opening of the tooth. To prevent the tooth from further damage, restoration services are necessary which may consist of placing a crown or post to protect the tooth after undergoing a root canal. Symptoms of discomfort and tooth sensitivity are common following completion of root canal treatment and can be treated with over-the- counter medications. Undergoing a root canal is a beneficial procedure that ensures appropriate dental health and functionality for an effective period of time. At Barre Dentistry Implants we are committed in providing patients with an overview of the potential benefits and possible consequences of undergoing root canal treatment.
